Brown coal, or lignite, is the lowest rank of coal and although it is present in all states of Australia it is most abundant in the Gippsland Basin (Victoria). Smaller amounts of brown coal are also loed in the Otway (Victoria), Murray (Victoria/South Australia) and Eucla (Western Australia/South Australia) basins.
Lignite has the lowest carbon content of coal, somewhere between 25 and 35 percent. The heat value of lignite ranges between 4,000 and 8,300 Btu's per pound.
